Flavours of Spain, Part 3: Chocolate con Churros

Today I'm going to bake Chocolate con churros in the form of a Cupcake.
Chocolate con churros is probably the most traditional breakfast in Spain. Actually, we eat them for breakfast every 1st of January. They even have their own Wikipedia page!

I had never cooked "Churros" before, and now that I've learnt the recipe, I know my dad will want me to cook them for him every time I go back to Spain! haha :)

Anyway, let's talk about cupcakes...

My first step in creating the Chocolate con churros cupcakes was to cook some mini churros.

First of all, we need the same amount of water and flour.
Heat the water in a saucepan, adding a tsp of olive oil and a pinch of salt.
When the water starts to boil, add ALL the flour at the same time. Stir for 1 minute and remove from heat.

You'll get an extremely sticky dough: perfect!

Now heat some olive oil in a pan for deep frying. Place the dough in a piping bag with a tiny star tip (IMPORTANT: as the dough is very hard, the piping bag must be really thick or you'll end up breaking 4 plastic piping bags... as I did). Squeeze strips of dough into the hot oil.

Fry until golden brown and then dip in sugar.

For the cupcakes I've used this recipe from GoodFood. I was a bit disappointed, as they taste just like a Brownie and not like Dark-Chocolate Cupcakes... So if you know any good Dark-Chocolate Cupcakes recipes, use it instead :)

For the icing, I used 75gr vegetable shortening, 40gr butter, 100gr icing sugar and 100gr Nesquick. And then I used my mini churros to decorate.

This is the result:

They were delicious!!!!
I hope you like my idea! And don't forget you can always do big churros instead of mini ones and dip them in hot chocolate... there isn't a tastier breakfast!!
More recipes coming soon!

PS: Cooking these cupcakes has taught me a lesson: never walk around the house holding a dish with 3 cupcakes, a camera, a tray and a cup of tea because, if you trip, you'll probably manage to keep on holding the dish, the camera, the tray and the cup of tea... but the cupcakes will fly (literally) and end up smashed somewhere (buttercream and mini churros included)... And, believe me, the stains created by dark chocolate cupcakes are difficult to clean! haha :)

  7. La verdad es que es de una genialidad impresionante, llevar algo tan típico como el chocolate con churros a la versión cupcake. Me ENCANTA. Es algo súper asombroso. Tengo muy claro que voy a probarlo para una merienda que tengo que dar, la lástima es que no esté también en castellano, ya que mi inglés se ha quedado un poco en el olvido.
